🧭 Plot Summary

Ask someone why the Moon changes shape, and you'll often hear "Earth's shadow covers part of it." That's a real phenomenon — it's just called a lunar eclipse, and it happens maybe twice a year, not every single night. What actually drives the ordinary phase cycle is simpler: the Moon always has a sunlit half and a dark half, just like Earth does, and as the Moon orbits us, we see different amounts of that sunlit half depending on the angle between the Sun, the Moon, and us. You'll walk the full eight-phase cycle, learn to read waxing from waning at a glance, and connect the 29.5-day phase cycle to the Moon's actual 27.3-day orbit — the same solar/sidereal gap from Project 1.1.3, just applied to a different orbit this time.

What you'll do in this activity

  • Rule out the other obvious wrong answer: phases aren't Earth's shadow on the Moon — that's what causes an eclipse, a much rarer event.
  • Walk the full 8-phase cycle and learn to read waxing vs. waning off which side is lit.
  • Connect the 29.5-day phase cycle to the Moon's actual 27.3-day orbit — the same solar/sidereal gap from Project 1.1.3, now applied to the Moon.
  • Use a phase to predict roughly when the Moon rises and sets that night.
  • Given tonight's phase, predict how many nights until the next full or new moon.

Why it matters

Your Eclipse Explainer project needs exactly this geometry — an eclipse is a special case of the same Sun-Moon-Earth alignment you're about to learn to track. And when the unit's Sky Report hands you a date, the Moon's phase is one of the first things you'll be expected to nail down.
