The Project: Timeline of Everything

📄 In-Class Project
3 in-class days. Event bank, scale options, sample scale note, checklist, day-by-day plan, and rubric below.

🎯 Deliverable — Pick a Format

A visual timeline or infographic of cosmic history, Big Bang to today, plus a short scale note.

🖼️ Poster or Scroll

Hand-drawn or printed, on poster board or a long strip of paper. A long scroll is a great way to make a true-scale line feel as long as it really is.

💻 Digital Infographic

A single-page infographic or a scrolling slide/web design. Any tool works — just keep the scale labeled.

Read the Deep Dive first — it covers the Big Bang evidence and the early universe that this project needs.

🗓️ The Event Bank

A starting list of milestones with approximate times. Use at least 12, covering all three eras. You may add your own events — just check the dates with a reliable source.

Times are rounded, and some early-universe and early-life dates are still actively debated. "~" means approximately.

📏 Choose Your Scale

Every option distorts something. Pick one on purpose — the Deep Dive's interactive timeline and cosmic calendar let you test them.

🔍 Linear + zoom boxes
One true-scale line, with magnified insets for the first 380,000 years and for recent history.
📈 Logarithmic
Each step is a fixed multiple longer than the last. Spreads out the first seconds; squeezes later eras.
📅 Cosmic calendar
All 13.8 billion years as one year: the Big Bang on January 1, today at midnight on December 31.
〰️ Broken axis
Sections of different scales joined by clearly marked breaks, each labeled with its own time span.

📝 Sample Scale Note

Every timeline needs one, printed right on it. Here's a model — for a design you shouldn't copy exactly.

Scale note

"My main line is linear: 1 cm = 500 million years, so the whole strip is 27.6 cm long. On that scale the first 380,000 years is thinner than a pencil line, so I added a zoom box that uses a logarithmic scale for the first 380,000 years. A second zoom box shows the last 600 million years. The main line is honest about how long things took; the zoom boxes let you actually read the crowded parts."

Evidence tags can be as simple as a small icon beside an event — 📡 CMB, ⚛️ element abundances, 🔭 lookback observations, 🦴 fossils — with a key explaining each.

📋 Content Checklist

Every item below has to show up somewhere on your timeline — check them off as you go.

📅 Day-by-Day Plan

Day 1
Learn & Plan
Work through the Deep Dive. Choose at least 12 events across all three eras, pick your scale, and sketch a rough layout — including where your zoom boxes or breaks will go.
Day 2
Build
Build the timeline: place events to scale, write each one-sentence description, and add your evidence tags and scale note.
Day 3
Scale-Test & Submit
Swap with a partner. Ask them: which lasted longer, the gap between the first stars and the Sun, or between the Sun and today? If your design misleads them, fix it. Then submit.

📊 Grading Rubric — 100 pts

A starting point — adjust weights to fit your class before assigning.

CategoryWeightExemplaryProficientDevelopingIncomplete
Accuracy & Order30 ptsEvery event is in the right order with a correct time, and each has a clear one-sentence description. One or two times or descriptions off; order correct.Several events out of order or with wrong times.Timeline largely missing.
Scale Strategy20 ptsA deliberate, labeled scale (with zoom insets or breaks where needed) and a scale note explaining the choice and what it distorts.Scale is labeled and reasonable, but the scale note is thin.Scale unclear or unlabeled; spacing looks arbitrary. No scale or scale note.
Coverage20 ptsAt least 12 events spanning all three eras: the early universe, stars and galaxies, and our home.12 events, but one era is thin.Fewer than 12 events, or an entire era missing.Only a few events.
Evidence Tags15 ptsAt least three events are tagged with the evidence that tells us about them (e.g. the CMB, element abundances, lookback observations, fossils).Evidence tags present, but one is vague or mismatched.Only one tag, or tags that don't match the event. No evidence tags.
Design & Readability15 ptsClean, readable, and visually clear; a viewer can follow the story at a glance.Mostly clear with minor clutter.Crowded or hard to follow. Not submitted.
