🛰️ Alternate Path — Defend Your Mission Proposal

With your teacher's approval, you may instead defend your team's Project 6.2.3 mission proposal as your capstone. If you do, add a new section on biosignatures: which gases or other signs your mission would look for, what non-living explanations could fool it, and exactly what result would convince you — not just intrigue you — that you'd found life. The same rubric applies, with "gas-by-gas analysis" judged on that new section.

📋 Deliverable — Your Report Must Include

📊 Grading Rubric — 100 pts

A starting point — adjust weights to fit your class before assigning.

CategoryWeightExemplaryProficientDevelopingIncomplete
The Call & Its Reasoning20 ptsA clear call (fund follow-up or not) with an honest confidence level, and reasoning that follows from the evidence.Clear call; reasoning mostly follows but skips a step.Call is vague or not connected to the evidence. No call made.
Gas-by-Gas Analysis25 ptsEvery detected gas gets both a living and a non-living explanation; the student explains which combination matters and why, and accounts for detection confidence. Most gases analyzed well; one explanation or confidence level overlooked.Treats a single gas as proof, or ignores non-living explanations. No gas analysis.
Planet Context15 ptsUses size, density, star type, and habitable-zone position to strengthen or weaken the case, with numbers.Uses most context; one factor missing.Context listed but not connected to the argument.Missing.
What Would Convince You15 ptsNames specific follow-up observations and explains what each result would change — the difference between intriguing and convincing.Names follow-ups, but doesn't say what the results would mean."More research is needed," with no specifics.Missing.
Synthesis Across the Course10 ptsDraws accurately on at least three different parts of the course (e.g. spectra, stars, transits, habitable zones, extremophiles, missions).Draws on two parts of the course.Only uses this unit's final lessons.Missing.
The Defense15 ptsConfident, well-organized presentation; handles tough questions with evidence and admits uncertainty honestly.Clear presentation; some questions answered weakly.Reads from notes; struggles with questions. Not presented.
